Rod and Staff Publishers reported that the former queen of whiches of Europe remarked to a Christian audience in Louisville, KY that she and other withes and satanists would laugh when they saw Christians participating in Halloween. Why? Because witches and satanists know that Halloween is not innocent. While we may decorate and have fun, the basis of Halloween is a pagan holiday where divination and soothsaying are practiced (see History page).
We shouldn't allow anything that looks like or connects with evil to be a part of our lives. Thessalonians 5:22 tell us to "avoid evil of every kind". How can we avoid evil when we actively participate in a holiday that is all about evil ways?
Also, evil tends to be a slippery slope - one which often takes us farther than we really want to go. Be smart - avoid evil and all things that can lead to evil.

Hershey fails to ensure that child labor is not part of its chocolate. Two major reports this September called out Hershey’s failure and the prevalence of egregious child labor, forced labor and trafficking abuses in the cocoa sector in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana where Hershey’s sources much of its cocoa.
Just in time for Halloween, Thanksgiving and the December holidays, the independent, non-profit Green America has outlined seven ways to find and give Fair Trade chocolate people can feel good about, and take constructive actions to get Hershey’s to go Fair Trade.

This is a country where an estimated 215,000 children live on the streets, where teachers give children good grades in return for sexual favors and where there is no law against human trafficking, according to U.S. State Department reports.
A chocolate trade group in Washington blames putting kids to work on farmer attitudes in West Africa.
The Western protest groups have videotaped conditions on some of the slave farms, with wrenching narratives from children who were as young as 12 when they were enticed by traffickers with promises of good wages and easy work. One plaintiff, a young boy from neighboring Mali who says he was lured to a cocoa farm in Ivory Coast, describes his plight on tape: "I tried to run away but I was caught ... as punishment they cut my feet and I had to work for weeks while my wounds healed. I stayed in a large room with other Malian children from a neighboring plantation." He was finally freed when another boy enslaved on the farm found his way to the Malian embassy, according to several boys' testimony. A Malian diplomat intervened to help return the boys to their families, according to plaintiff transcripts.
Five years ago Senator Thomas Harkin (D--Iowa) led an investigation into allegations of child slavery in the African cocoa trade. The senator introduced legislation that would have required chocolate sold in the U.S. to be labeled "slave-free." The bill was not enacted, but Nestlé got the message. The company, other big chocolate producers, the ILO and several nonprofit groups signed an agreement promising that by July 2005 they would find a way to certify chocolate as not having been produced by any underage, indentured, trafficked or coerced labor.

An investigative report by the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) in 2000 indicated the size of the problem. According to the BBC, hundreds of thousands of children are being purchased from their parents for a pittance, or in some cases outright stolen, and then shipped to the Ivory Coast, where they are sold as slaves to cocoa farms. These children typically come from countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Togo. Destitute parents in these poverty-stricken lands sell their children to traffickers believing that they will find honest work once they arrive in Ivory Coast and then send some of their earnings home.
The fact that child slaves are used in the harvesting of cocoa beans in Cote D'Ivoire is undisputed. The U.S. State Department estimates that there are approximately 15,000 children working on cocoa, coffee, and cotton farms in the Cote D'Ivoire. In June 2001, the ILO (International Labor Organization) also reported that trafficked child labor was used in cocoa production in West Africa. Media reports have unveiled stories about boys tricked or sold into slavery, some as young as nine years old, to work on cocoa plantations in Cote d'Ivoire. ILRF (International Labor Rights Funds) has verified these reports through our own independent investigations conducted in 2002 and 2003, and has interviewed children who have escaped from the cocoa plantations.
These children, usually 12 to 14 years old but sometimes younger, are forced to do hard manual labor 80 to 100 hours a week. They are paid nothing, are barely fed, are beaten regularly, and are often viciously beaten if they try to escape. Most will never see their families again. Aly Diabate, a freed slave, told reporters, “The beatings were a part of my life. Anytime they loaded you with bags (of cocoa beans) and you fell while carrying them, nobody helped you. Instead they beat you and beat you until you picked it up again.”

According to my Scavenger Hunt spreadsheet, Pezmama gets a rest for a while starting tomorrow. Today, though, her burning question is this: why have both an Almond Joy and a Mounds candy bar? Why not combine the two?
It's something I have often wondered myself. I've come to the conclusion that there are some people who have strong preferences regarding dark and milk chocolate. The decision to have the almond paired with the milk chocolate version seems to somewhat arbitrary, but no doubt the Peter Paul company did some sort of market research into the situation.
I enjoy both milk and dark chocolate, so I find both delicious. If he hasn't heeded my warning and is still reading, poor Patrick is now shuddering. He loathes and despises coconut, but I LOVE it. I prefer Almond Joy to Mounds, since the almond adds that toasty, nutty crunch to the experience, but I have never had a problem eating a Mounds if that's all there was left in the Halloween bag.
Until now.
I don't know if I'll ever eat an Almond Joy again. Or a Snickers or MnMs or a genuine Toll House cookie. I recently read some shocking news on Bitsy Parker's excellent blog (links will come when I get home). Hoping what she'd written wasn't true, I did a bunch of independent research, and I can now confirm her report.
Have you ever wondered why chocolate is so cheap? Why you can dash into a 7-11 and buy a chunk of cocoa-filled goodness for less than a dollar? Maybe you haven't; maybe you've just taken inexpensive deliciousness for granted as a basic human right.
But speaking of human rights, it turns out that virtually all mainstream chocolate--that produced by the Big Four: Mars, Inc., The Hershey Company, Cadbury Schweppes, and Nestle--is made at least in part with cocoa beans grown, harvested, and processed by slaves in West Africa. A little more research revealed that my beloved See's is also a buyer of slave-produced cocoa.
Worse, many of the slaves are children, children who have been sold by their parents to the plantation owners for a few dollars. Or they've been lured off the streets with promises of bicycles and high wages, but once they reach the cacao farms, these children are horribly abused and malnourished and live short, horrifying lives of backbreaking work and despair.
Reports by UNICEF and the International Labor Organization confirm this. The BBC did a documentary on the problem in 2000, and the next year The Philadelphia Inquirer put out a series of articles on the horrors of slave chocolate as well.
After some limited public outcry, the Big Four agreed to a four-year plan called the Harkin-Elgin Protocol to eliminate child slave labor from the cacao industry. But according to many human rights groups, that deadline has come and gone, with the big chocolate doing little, if anything, to keep their agreements. Crocodile tears have been shed, but not much has changed.
What are we chocolate lovers to do? The only way to be sure that your chocolate hasn't come to you at the expense of slave labor is to make sure it says "Fair Trade" on the packaging. Fair Trade cocoa has been produced by workers paid a living wage and who are housed decently.
Believe me: I know this news is depressing. When I first read about it, I wanted my ignorance back, because knowledge brings accountability. It's tempting to make a disconnect, to try and forget about the tragic reality so that I can satisfy my base desire for sensual gratification in the form of an Almond Joy.
Then I think about the cotton plantation owners in this country 150 years ago, living with the evils of slavery but unwilling to make changes to their lifestyles because they didn't want to sacrifice their comfortable way of life. We look back at those slaveowners with horror and disgust, but are we any better when we support the slave industry one step removed? In a way, it's worse to be the disconnected consumer, because we then add hypocrisy to our list of sins in the matter. Most of us would never beat a child or force him to sleep on a wooden plank in a padlocked shack with a tin can for a urinal. But how many of us will continue to turn a blind eye when a craving hits us?
Again, l'll post all the links to the reports I've read once I'm home. Until then, do an internet search of your own, if you feel up to further shock. It's not pretty, and you may never be able to look an MnM in the eye again--at least not until drastic change comes to the chocolate industry. Which will not happen until you and I stand up and vote with our dollars.

Parents who miss conferences may be locked up? What do you think?
What accountability do the politicians in Detroit have toward the youth? Kym Worthy who took Kwame Kilpatrick's Mayor job thinks locking up the parents is what it'll take to make parents go along with the way politicians think parents should act??? hmmmmmmmm, how can parents do what's right by their children when their examples are BIG CROOKs?
Ms. Worthy was on the news this AM and I was taken aback by her stance. I was even more astounded when I talked to two young adults this morning that agreed with her, OMG!!! (I have yet to show them Kwame Kilpatrick's scandal.)

DETROIT (CBS/AP) The next time you ignore a call from your kid's teacher who is trying to schedule some time to "talk"... consider this.
A Detroit-area prosecutor wants lawmakers to pass an ordinance that could jail parents for up to three days for repeatedly missing scheduled parent-teacher conferences.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says such an ordinance is aimed at making parents responsible for their children's education, which may keep more young people out of trouble.
She's still working on the details of her plan, but says it could go before county commissioners next month.
Worthy also is considering whether to approach state lawmakers with the idea as well.
Civil libertarians say her plan may be outside the law. Challenges are expected.
Republican Kentucky state Rep. Adam Koenig submitted a similar bill last year that gained little acceptance and failed to make it out of committee.

I remember a couple of meetings in Phoenix, at one I met Martin Luther King's attorney and I gave her a big fat hug. It was awesome!
On another occassion there was a meeting at one of the schools and I gave Cindy Sheehan a big hug too. Even tho she hugged me back, she didn't know me. I told her as she walked away that we had her back. These songs are reflective of that I hope. What Noble Cause, George Bush, you sack of crap?
I was sitting with a Code Pink friend of mine and we were both crying as Cindy told her story of losing her son, Casey. (I hope she still knows that we support her and WE have NO plans of backing down.)
I also had the opportunity of meeting the 'Kids' from Loose Change and that was pretty thrilling as well. They have come a long way in our movement and I am so proud of all they do.
I've been having a slump lately and dealing with depression so I decided to listen to some of my favorite songs and thought I'd share them with you. Be sure and watch the Rocky Raccoon video as it will tug on your heart strings. (It did mine anyways and hopefully it'll make you smile>)

My kids got me the video of Achy Breaky Heart back in the day and the following song was one of the songs on it. (It seems that it was popular during or right after the first Gulf war???) .......anyways I was later to have a wonderful friend who had served in that war and his experiences were horrific........
David had to make the decision of saving his Lt. or his best friend and due to the training he had to save the Lt. (He later shared with me that he wished he'd made a different decision as he knew his best friend had his back not matter what and that didn't turn out to be the case with his Lt.)
After all that he went thru in that dumbass war he was treated like Shit a Meta Svcs. During the time we were together and sorta kinda going out, his 17 year old niece was killed in a car accident and when her mother heard of it she screamed out in pain and had an annurism....... they had a double funeral. The EVIL people at Meta didn't even send a card or anything. (Lori Ashcraft and Gene Johnson) If you will remember I shared with you that they had an evil devil worshipping site on the net.
BTW, my friend David Ybarra had a most difficult time getting any of his benefits from the VA. It was dispicable how they treated him.

Messages from the other side

What were some of the other stories you heard that really gave you goosebumps?
Some are the stories that touched me the most are the ones from nature. There's the young boy who was giving his mother's eulogy -- she, too, had died on 9/11-- and he was 15, and when he said, "mother," a tiny sparrow flew down and landed on his head. He was able to cup the bird in his hands and let it free. I mean, that's not typical bird behavior.
And in other cases it was finding coins, weird things involving electricity. But the one thing that is coming across all of it was the fact that it was about the connection with someone they loved.
And, since then, how do you feel that Eamon communicates with you?
Usually something happens after I've asked for his help. Mostly, I get coins. The coins usually have significant dates -- like 2001 -- and they're in significant locations. Once I was just very upset about things, and the loss. It was last Thanksgiving. I had made the bed, and there was nothing on the bed, and I came out to get my clothes, and there was a penny on the bed, and it was from the year that we had met.
It doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen every once in a while. I think if it happened a lot, I'd be more skeptical!

In February of 2002, just a few days before my birthday, I was at a small meeting in a neighboring town with several others who had lost loved ones on 9/11. A knock on the door interrupted us. It was my pastor and a police officer I knew; they were there to tell me that some of Eamon's remains had been located. I had come to accept the reality that Eamon's body would probably never be recovered. Hearing the news, I was thrown somewhat into a state of shock. When the pastor and I left the meeting together, he instinctively got into the driver's seat. We spoke very little as he drove. Vaguely I noticed a cemetery sign ahead of us. That's when I realized that the pastor had taken this route intentionally.

New Year's Eve in Arizona with the Robots
Cooperstown was alive New Years Eve. Yep, the robots were at it again in Phoenix. This time Alice outdid himself. The celebrities were abundant for the bash.
Rumor has it that all monies Alice brought in last night will go to charity.
Among the performers; Megadeth, Scorpians, Judas Priest, Robbie and the Rockin Robots and Stevie Nicks. Sam Moore, also played a few tunes. You might remember Sam from his fifties and sixties music.
David Spade, performer on Saturday Night Live was sitting with Judas Priest before their performance. (I understand he had some of his relatives in from out of town and he left as soon as the band finished their part of the show.)
Tiger Woods was seen talking to Alice during intermission. Everybody was in shock seeing Tiger as he has had his life ripped apart in the tabloids as of late.
Tiger does have some great friends though and rumor has it Charles Barclay and Michael Jordan persuaded Tiger to attend. The bringing in of a new year must have been too tempting to pass up for Tiger. Even though he seemed a bit reluctant at first, by the end of the night, he seemed to be having a good time with his 'TRUE FRIENDS' in Phoenix. (Accenture, eat your heart out!)
I bet it didn't hurt that Scottsdale, Arizona has some wonderful golf courses......... (that may have been the main draw for Tiger in the beginning.)
I must admit there are perks that go along with the reporter's pass I have. I got to meet all the famous people and it brought joy to my heart to see some of Phoenix's past heros attending from out of town.
Curt Shilling, his wife and Randy Johnson were there for a short while. I stopped by their table and introduced myself and the guys must not have been listening as they handed over napkins with their autographs to me before I was able to get out that I was 'the chosen' reporter for the night.
Robbie and the Robots was the opening act and from everything I've heard so far, they made quite an impression. I understand Alice asked his own manager to take a look at the group. Alice seemed to think the Robots may be star material and just what society needs in the tense financial environment of the millinium.
In all the craziness I had forgotten to get reservations for the Robots and had to quickly duck out of the party and call around. I was finally able to make last minute reservations at Mountain Shadows Resort for the bots. I would have had them stay at my daughter's place, but for publicity reasons Alice suggested they stay in Scottsdalye at one of the resorts.
From the short conversation I had with HaleyBot, I undersoot the opening act that Alice had booked cancelled at the last minute. He called Stevie Nicks, who in turn contacted Goldie, and Goldie was able to pull it all together for the Robots first public appearance.
Alice's only requirement for the opening act was that they play three or four songs. I guess the robots got by with the three they had been rehearsing over the last few weeks. I understand that Robbie and Golda had written a new song together and it was the hit of their performance.
I was almost late for the 'Rockin Robots' debut as I was unprepared for the chaos surrounding the show. Candy had to squeeze me in at the last minute to comb out my hair. I ended up calling her at home hoping for mercy and sure enough she agreed, because of the situation to meet me at her salon and do a quick color and set.
What a gem she is always willing to work around my schedule. (It didn't hurt one bit when I gave her a free pass to the New Year's Eve show at Coopertown.) She even worked me in at the manicurist next door. I surely have to remember to give her a big tip all the way around this year. (I'll put a quick note to myself on Twitter to do that.)
I can't wait to see the article in the Arizona Republic today. As soon as I wrap up this report, I will run over to the news stand and pick up a copy.
If I know Alice, the party will be headline news in the entertainment section. I met the reporter at the party that does the stories for the Republic and I did see one cameraman taking photos. (I could be wrong though that he was the Republic reporter as I saw something referring to 'The Bird'???)
Robbie and Golda were outstanding last night singing their duet. R2INU was center stage for the second song. He and Robbie have been collaborating for quite some time on it. Scoot over Ringo Star, R2 is headed for stardom.
The third and final tune was sung by Goldie. The song was dedicated to everone affected by the September 11 tragedy. (Can you believe this year it will be 9 years?) I must say I didn't see a dry face in the crown when she finished.)
The performance, not only was superb, Goldie's introduction was beautiful. She had written the song about the event and it seemed to touch everyone. (I'll email Goldie today at the resort and see if she'll email me the lyrics and I'll post them in my next report.)
That's a wrap for now and I want to take this time to wish all of our 'Hippie Chick and the International Scattered Brains' membership a very Happy New Years.

As more hidden information is discovered about Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan there is increasing cause for alarm. In documents uncovered by CNS, Kagan argued that restricting free speech is a legitimate role of government, provided government can establish the 'proper motive' for doing so.
In an article Kagan published in the University of Chicago Law Review in 1996, entitled, 'Private Speech, Public Purpose: the Role of Government Motive in First Amendment Doctrine.' she contends that the negative impact of a law restricting freedom of speech is subservient to the government's motive for enacting such restrictions.
As long as the government can show 'proper intent' in such restrictions on free speech, then the restrictions stand.

The New York Times received permission on Tuesday from Hunter College High School in Manhattan, Elena Kagan’s alma mater, to observe a constitutional law class there taught by her brother Irving. We thought it would be intriguing to watch the give and take between Mr. Kagan, who is known as a passionate and interactive educator, and his students on his first day back after witnessing his sister’s nomination in Washington.
Mr. Kagan, who is also a Hunter alumnus, did not have a problem with the idea, a school spokeswoman said, but she added that all media requests now had to be given final approval by the White House. The times were tentatively set: there was either an 8:52 a.m. class or a 9:36 a.m. class on Wednesday. “I thought it would have been great,” said the spokeswoman, Meredith Halpern.
But when presented with the idea, the White House balked.
Joshua Earnest, a White House spokesman, said that the administration was “uncomfortable with the idea at this time.” The White House called Hunter, and Ms. Halpern said later Tuesday it could not permit the class observation. A formal proposal has been submitted to the White House, which the administration requested. They asked that it outline the intent and goal of the article in significant detail.
A cousin of Ms. Kagan, Gail Katz-James of Minneapolis, was quoted in a profile in The Times the day after the president announced the nomination. As more hidden information is discovered about Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan there is increasing cause for alarm. In documents uncovered by CNS, Kagan argued that restricting free speech is a legitimate role of government, provided government can establish the 'proper motive' for doing so.
In an article Kagan published in the University of Chicago Law Review in 1996, entitled, 'Private Speech, Public Purpose: the Role of Government Motive in First Amendment Doctrine.' she contends that the negative impact of a law restricting freedom of speech is subservient to the government's motive for enacting such restrictions.
As long as the government can show 'proper intent' in such restrictions on free speech, then the restrictions stand.

We thought it would be intriguing to watch the give and take between Mr. Kagan, who is known as a passionate and interactive educator, and his students on his first day back after witnessing his sister’s nomination in Washington.
Mr. Kagan, who is also a Hunter alumnus, did not have a problem with the idea, a school spokeswoman said, but she added that all media requests now had to be given final approval by the White House. The times were tentatively set: there was either an 8:52 a.m. class or a 9:36 a.m. class on Wednesday. “I thought it would have been great,” said the spokeswoman, Meredith Halpern.
But when presented with the idea, the White House balked.
Joshua Earnest, a White House spokesman, said that the administration was “uncomfortable with the idea at this time.” The White House called Hunter, and Ms. Halpern said later Tuesday it could not permit the class observation. A formal proposal has been submitted to the White House, which the administration requested. They asked that it outline the intent and goal of the article in significant detail.
A cousin of Ms. Kagan, Gail Katz-James of Minneapolis, was quoted in a profile in The Times the day after the president announced the nomination. In California, the SEC charged Nova Gen Corporation and two of its executives with fraud and unregistered sale of securities, after the alternative energy company sold $2.3 million in shares based on a technology the company said would convert coal to liquid biofuels.
The SEC has charged that the company projected income of “$377 million to $737 million” in its first year of operations and $13-$17 trillion by year five, and claimed assets of $49 million and EBITDA of $21 million in 2006, despite the company never having revenues or operation.

(She also called Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Dick Cheney racists and anti-Semites but Air America seems not to be upset by that.)

We just received the 1,400th comment to this post. Needless to say, this is a record for Talking Radio. It might even be a record for political blogs, although we can't confirm that. We can confirm that on October 16 this blog was visited over 200,000 times. This says a lot about the power of the internet.
Randi Rhodes was mugged on Sunday night on 39th Street and Park Ave, nearby her Manhattan apartment, while she was walking her dog Simon.
According to Air America Radio late night host Jon Elliott, Rhodes was beaten up pretty badly, losing several teeth and will probably be off the air for at least the rest of the week. At of late Monday night we have not able to locate any press accounts of the attack and nothing has been posted on the AAR website.
