The permit for the concert was rejected by the original town of Walkill. The festival was held in Bethel, because Elliot Tiber (Eliyahu Teichberg), a gay Jewish resident of the area, had the right to issue festival permits for his town. He was the town’s head of the Chamber of Commerce (no one else wanted the job) Having a taste for the BDSM scene, he has been present a few weeks earlier at the Stonewall riots in Manhattan which gave birth to the modern gay rights movement, and wanted to be a part of history. He contacted the organizers of the Woodstock concert. The Ang Lee film is based on Elliot’s book about the festival. Elliot’s parents ran a rundown, struggling motel in the area, and it was used as the planning center for the concert. I met Elliot this past Spring in Manhattan, as well his friends, lawyer, and the current owner of the farm (all Jewish). He is quite a character. His shticks are funnier than most stand-up comics. He is proof that it usually takes quirky narcissistic characters to get unusual things accomplished. Elliot’s book is titled “Taking Woodstock: A True Story of a Riot, a Concert, and a Life.”

I wanna tell you guys that I've been to probably 6 or 7 concerts in my whole life and 3 of them were in Fresno, Ca., and one at the Madera Speedway ........ well, maybe I've only been to 4 or 5 in my whole life. 1) Bill Graham, who had been a fan of the band from the start, convinced the promoters of the Woodstock Music and Art Festival to let them appear before their first album was even released. They were one of the surprises of the festival; their set was legendary and, later, the exposure of their eleven-minute instrumental "Soul Sacrifice" in the Woodstock film and soundtrack albums vastly increased Santana's popularity. Graham also gave the band some key advice to record the Willie Bobo song "Evil Ways", as he felt it would get them radio airplay. Their first album, simply titled Santana, became a huge hit, reaching number four on the U.S. album charts, and the catchy single "Evil Ways" reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.
2) English band Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman" and a number-thirteen hit out of salsa legend Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va".
3) A South American tour was cut short in Lima, Peru, due to student protests against U.S. governmental policies and unruly fans. The madness of the tour convinced Santana that changes needed to be made in the band and in his life.

Bill Graham

In the mid-1980s, in conjunction with the city of Mountain View, California, and Apple Inc. cofounder Steve Wozniak, he masterminded the creation of the Shoreline Amphitheatre, which became the premier venue for outdoor concerts in the Silicon Valley. Throughout his career, Graham promoted benefit concerts. During the 1980s, as his organization grew, Graham left more of the everyday details of his business to employees and focused his personal energies on promoting benefit concerts.

He would go on to set the standard for well-produced large-scale rock concerts, such as the American portion of Live Aid in JFK Stadium, Philadelphia on July 13, 1985, as well as the 1986 A Conspiracy of Hope and 1988 Human Rights Now! tours for Amnesty International. In addition, he presented regular concerts in Bay Area stadiums, referred to as "Days on the Green," and was known to aggressively challenge potential competition, referring to other promoters by the name "Joe Schlitz". He was often seen pounding his fist into his open hand and announcing that "Joe Schlitz will not come into this town."

Graham's monopoly business practices went as far as strong-arm contracts with the University of California Regents to control on-campus entertainment venues, thus preventing ASUC and other student organizations from promoting their own rock concerts in the 1980s. In the 1980s, he teamed up with BASS Tickets to drive small ticket-distribution companies out of business in the Bay Area, creating a de facto monopoly. After the smaller operations failed, the remaining one, Ticketmaster (formerly BASS), raised prices to unprecedented levels. Its only opposition came from a few bands, notably Pearl Jam, who protested that the company's high ticketing fees were unfair to music fans. Such practices were targeted by the California Senate in S.B. 815.[8]
